Bright Lights, Big City – No Sea Side
I’m the newest member of the illustrious Amateur Brain Surgery Club so I thought I should introduce myself.
I am ‘Matron’ – remember the ‘Carry On’ movies?
I’ve been associated with this band of miscreants for many years, since studying at Sussex University. I am a close friend and associate of the nurse (sadly currently incarcerated at her majesties pleasure) and up until only a couple of months ago I lived in Brighton. Daily I would commute to my job here in the city of London.
But my expenses were simply getting too much so I, like Obama’s cabinet, had to make some drastic cuts. The first thing I did was look at how to reduce the amount I was spending on travelling to work. The only option was to take a flat in London and give up my life by the sea side. What a pity.
So I employed a reputable London removals firm to pack up my belongings and take them to a new flat in Stepney. Instead of the early morning train from Brighton to Victoria I can now lie in bed for an hour before taking the tube to my work place, only ten minutes away. The downside is that the quality of my life has changed dramatically.
The warmer spring weather has made this change abundantly clear. I can no longer pop out for some fresh air and a stroll along Brighton sea front. I no longer have the South Downs on my doorstep encouraging me to get out into the countryside at the weekends.
Instead there are the London theatres, cinemas, shops, museums and art galleries. But I am really missing some of the simple pleasures that I enjoyed while living in Brighton. What should I do?
My current plan is to try and stick living in London for the summer to see how good or bad it can be and then re-assess my situation in the Autumn. I’ve had to sign a six month lease on my flat so I suppose I’m stuck here for the time being.
London is a great city with so much to offer but I’m already pining for the fresh air, the seaside and the South Downs of Brighton.

It sounds like you’ll be hopping on train down to Brighton for your weekends. I used to live in London but moved to the sea side myself to get away from the grime -

I love the sea too and that refreshing ocean breeze. I can understand you pining for that. Just ride it out and when your finances gets better, you can just buy a fuel-efficient car so you can still enjoy the sea-side dwelling while still working in the big city with the bright lights.
By the way, I love your site’s template/theme. It’s really easy on the eyes. Good for people like me with not-so-good eyesight. LOL

I would love to live in London, I’m a city man myself. I enjoy the hustle bustle, and I fear that if I lived out by the sea, I would die of boredom. Make the most of it though, there might be a few things that the city has to really improve your quality of life.

Living on the coast is great. Much cleaner air than land-locked fuggy cities. I don’t envy your living in London. If this coming summer gets as hot as forecasters say it will then London will become really uncomfortable. I’ll bet you move back to the coast before the end of 2009.

I have always wanted to move down to a sea side resort, it seems so much quieter and cleaner than a city. My partner loves the city life though have been trying to talk him round for the last 3 years!

Bermuda has a wonderul artistic atmosphere; if you’re a fan of art in general I would suggest going there. There are brilliant water colors and other paintings to see. If you do go, when you get off the plane in Bermuda, be sure to check out the 7-foot tall sculpture on display at the airport. It was made by Bermuda native artist, Chelsey Trott. The art is just another in a long list of great reasons to visit Bermuda. The things you seem to enjoy are there… art and the sea side

I am sure you will be able to find yourself some decent employment in Brighton if thats where you decide to be. I definately wouldnt move back there and start commuting again every day. There is a reason you stopped doing that in the first place. Good luck, hope you do whatever makes you happy and content.
