scared man!

Why is our government trying to scare us? And more importantly, why are we letting them?

Why are we so paranoid about terrorists and terrorism these days? Back in the 70s and 80s the IRA was actually bombing the life out of London, Birmingham, Guildford and anywhere else they could manage. On a regular basis. There was good reason to be wary and careful. We viewed railway station litter bins with justifiable suspicion. But as far as I remember we weren’t afraid, we simply got on with things.

Our politicians tell us that there are more terrorist plots being hatched than ever. But where are they? 9/11 was a tragedy, undoubtedly a spectacular and dramatic effort, but realistically it could have been much worse in terms of numbers of lost lives. And it was a long time ago. The London bombings are also a long time ago. Admit it, we’re hardly being blown up at every turn.

Why are people so paranoid? And where’s our famous collective spirit disappeared to? The Nurse recommends you don’t let the government fool you into being scared without reason. Think logically, exercise common sense and you’ll realise that there’s actually nothing tangible to worry about. So why is our government trying to scare us? Is it because, without religion to fall back on, it’s the only way to keep the populace obedient and under control?

Afer decades of political indifference, The Nurse finds herself emerging as a re-born protester. Thanks to blogging. People in their mid forties are usually too settled to protest much. But with today’s farty, inward looking, spiritless younger generations not seeming to give a toss (the ‘Student Protest’ is long dead) perhaps it’s up to us to stand and be counted.
